2012 – 2016 - Asymmetric Cryptography for Embedded Systems – 1.
- Coordinator: Wilson Vicente Ruggiero
- Description: The goal of this proposal is to develop asymmetric cryptographic primitives for encryption and digital signature, which are essential services in any modern secure system. We focus on asymmetric cryptography because such algorithms are generally more time and energy consuming than symmetric primitives, meaning that the optimization of such components effectively addresses the bottleneck of many cryptographic protocols. Our approach for tackling this issue is to evaluate Code-Based Cryptography (CBC), which employs the principles of coding theory and error-correcting codes for providing encryption services. We also consider Multivariate Quadratic Equations (MQ), which employs the principles of multivariate equation systems for providing digital signatures. Our goal is to evaluate in which extent such cryptographic primitives can surpass similar-purpose solutions, including traditional approaches such as RSA and also more modern ones such as Elliptic Curve Cryptography, when used in system-on-a-chip (SoC) devices. In order to have a fair evaluation of the cryptographic algorithms in a SoC environment, a low power implementation methodology will be applied. Power optimizations focus on energy savings at the logic and algorithm level as well as on circuit and architecture level. Some of these methods are available in EDA tools such as Synopsys Design Compiler and Power Compiler. Other methods should be covered during the hardware description. The metrics considered in this project are the key, ciphertext and signature sizes and implementation of low power methodologies during design, as well as time and energy consumption, when compared with state-of-the-art solutions. With the resource reduction, the scope of project has also been reduced, but the subject studied and the proposal remains the same. Since the time spent on the research is less than expected it will not be possible to go as deep as we thought..
