2004 – 2008 – KyaTera.

- Description: Research Project - KyaTera - Optical Networks: Duration: 3 years; Funder: FAPESP; Value: R$400,000.00. This project aims to promote the development of the capacity to generate knowledge in optical network technologies and to generate future applications of the Advanced Internet, such as sharing laboratory facilities remotely, teaching experimental sciences remotely, telecollaboration and carrying out experiments via the Internet. This project is premised on the availability of a high-performance network, namely the Advanced Internet based on the FTTL (Fiber-to-the-Lab) concept. More specifically, in this first phase the project aims to develop a fiber optic network that allows communications without tangible bandwidth limits for new Internet applications. The development of the network by the researchers themselves and partner companies, based on total mastery of the technologies involved, also aims to multiply the capacity for innovation, generation of knowledge and training of human resources in quality and quantity in the area of very high capacity optical networks within the State of São Paulo. Another objective of the project is to stimulate the training and innovation of companies in the State of São Paulo through bidding for the development of devices, equipment and other items to be used in the FTTL network and Web Labs, as well as through partnerships with research institutions participating in the project. The main expected result is the development of an FTTL-type network, standardized and modular for its growth, which enables a new model of cooperative research and excellence in all areas of knowledge. This network will be composed of an unlit fiber mesh where researchers can experimentally demonstrate new concepts of optical networks and new applications for the Internet of the future.
2003 – 2010 - TIDIA Ae - Phase I and Phase II.

- Description: TIDIA Ae: Electronic Learning - Phase I Duration: 15 months Funder: FAPESP; Value: R$ 1,100,000.00. This project aims to stimulate research in the area of Information Technology applied to Distance Education (EAD) based on the premise of the availability of a high-performance network, namely the Advanced Internet. More specifically, this project aims to stimulate research for the development of a set of integrated tools, independent of operational platform and aimed at distance learning. The tools must cover the three large groups of general distance learning tools: administration, coordination and communication. Therefore, initiatives aimed at developing support tools within, but not restricted to, the following research topics are expected: - Administrative course management, involving access statistics, visualization of participant interaction, course analysis tools integrating content with student participation data, etc. - Formative and continuous assessment of student learning; - Co-presence and co-production tools; - Quality of service assured end-to-end regardless of the user's access method; - Interface and interoperability standards aimed at reusing academic content; - Creation, organization and maintenance of a repository of open knowledge objects, specified and constructed to be shared in the development of new teaching and learning content; - Support for updating, sharing, reusing and storing courses and content; - Virtual laboratories including remote access to real laboratories and context-specific simulations; - Improvement of online interaction and collaboration mechanisms; Ultimately, this project aims to create conditions for promoting research and development in the area of tools for teaching and learning.
