Projects: Sustainability
2021 – Present - Greenhouse Gas Research and Innovation Center - RCG2I.
- Coordinator: Julio Romano Meneghini
- Description: The FAPESP - SHELL GREENHOUSE GAS RESEARCH AND INNOVATION CENTER aims to be a world-class center for advanced studies focused on innovation for sustainability and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. The Center complements FAPESP's experience in supporting high-level scientific research and technology development in these areas. Our goal is to establish a world-class center with research, innovation and knowledge dissemination investigations to contribute globally to solutions for the most significant challenge humanity is facing in the 21st century: Climate Change. In this endeavor, the Center has five distinct but complementary research programs: Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), Carbon Capture and Storage for Bioenergy (BECCS), Greenhouse Gases (GHG), and Advocacy. The Center brings together a technical and scientific team that has been involved, over the past few years, in problems in the areas of energy and the environment, proposing partial solutions related to one of the aforementioned programs. The Center aims to integrate this effort, exploring the different approaches in a complementary way; to provide answers and innovative solutions, according to the best possible planning, to the issues raised by existing engineering problems, economic policies, and social impacts associated with greenhouse gas emissions and the environment. The integration of these five themes and all the knowledge and innovation generated in this Center will directly support Brazil in achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) through Research & Innovation. The Center will serve to unlock Brazil's potential for a sustainable energy transition, aiming for a temperature increase well below 2°C in the global climate change scenario. 2019 – Present - Amazonia 4.0 - Sustainability of Amazonian Production Chains.
- Coordinator: Ismael Nobre
- Description: The Amazon is known for its biodiversity, and extractive activities drive the local economy. Many Amazonian products are transported to large Brazilian metropolises and outside of Brazil, where they are sold raw or processed into high-value-added products. However, this movement of Amazonian products has benefited local communities little, despite the increasing appreciation of products demonstrably originating from the Amazon. Given this, this project aims to develop a solution to make the Brazil nut production chain (one of the main extractive products in Brazil) traceable using technologies such as Blockchain and IoT (Internet of Things), and to enable a fairer distribution of the profits from Brazil nut processing, also employing Blockchain mechanisms. The final result of the project should be a POC (Proof of Concept) demonstrating the technical feasibility of implementing the Brazil nut production chain with these characteristics.
