Projects: Software-Defined Networks (SDN) and Virtualization
2023 – Present - Intelligent communication based on software-defined networks for resource-limited devices (PQ Scholarship).
- Coordinator: Cíntia Borges Margi
- Description: Given the heterogeneous characteristics of WSNs and IoT, it is complex to establish flexible solutions that facilitate the adaptation of such a network to possible topology changes and enable reconfiguration for the execution of new tasks, as well as different communication standards at the link layer. However, the concept of software-defined networks (SDN) has been identified as a possible solution to provide the necessary flexibility and improve the management of heterogeneous networks. In this context, we proposed the IT-SDN framework, which consists of a communication protocol between the controller and the nodes (southbound protocol), a controller discovery protocol, and a neighbor discovery protocol. Performance evaluation results of the prototype demonstrate that its performance is compatible with RPL, disproving the myth that the operating cost of SDN is prohibitive. However, there are still some aspects to be addressed regarding the IT-SDN framework, notably: node mobility, and expanding the capacity to detect denial-of-service attacks on the IT-SDN control plane. 2013 – Present - (SD)2: Software-Defined Science DMZ.
- Coordinator: Tereza Cristina Melo de Brito Carvalho
- Description: To develop and demonstrate a DTN prototype using a Science DMZ network architecture. In a later phase, the prototype developed in the initial phase will be validated in selected campus network environments, with the goal of implementing a use case within the limited scope of at least two user institutions, in conjunction with RNP.
