Projects: Internet of Things (IoT) - Applications

2022 – 2025 - Artificial intelligence applied to the Internet of Things: new technologies for communications.

  • Coordinator: Cíntia Borges Margi
  • Description: Unlike traditional (wired) computer networks, ad hoc networks do not have available infrastructure, and the nodes themselves must perform the routing and packet forwarding work, and also coordinate access to the common communication medium. Among the specific cases of these networks, wireless sensor networks stand out, whose applications are part of IoT (Internet of Things) networks. Thus, this field of study presents challenging problems of scaling, coordination, control, and efficiency in network communication, and still has several unanswered questions. The overall objective of this research project is to establish new protocols for efficient long-distance communications in IoT and sensor networks by applying artificial intelligence techniques and implementing them on real platforms. Communication protocols will allow the deployment of a software-defined network framework over long-distance technology, in order to provide the creation of a multi-hop network. Furthermore, the design and implementation of the integration of communication protocol optimization and security strategies explored in this project will follow. https://bv.fapesp.br/pt/auxilios/110849/inteligencia-artificial-aplicada-a-internet-das-coisas-novas-tecnologias-para-comunicacoes/

2019 – 2023 - Enabling technologies for the Internet of Things.

  • Coordinator: Vítor Heloiz Nascimento
  • Description: Networks of interconnected devices are at the heart of several key future technologies, such as distributed control for autonomous vehicles, sensor networks for structural monitoring, and for smart cities. In addition to reliability, all these applications have strict requirements in terms of energy efficiency, security, latency, and self-optimization, and require innovative enabling technologies. The recent concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), envisioned to connect billions of wireless 'things' (wireless sensors, devices that can be carried by users, biochips, etc.) in a vast network with drastically different characteristics, has gone from being a futuristic vision to becoming increasingly closer to reality in recent years. The ELIOT project comes at the right time to address all the main challenges mentioned above.

2019 – 2022 - ADMIST - Architecting Distributed Monitoring and Analytics in IoT-based Disaster Scenarios.

  • Coordinator: Regina Melo Silveira
  • Description: The ADMIST project aims to develop algorithms, protocols, and architectures to enable a distributed computing environment to provide support for monitoring, failure detection, and analytics in IoT disaster scenarios. We face a context where, every year, millions of people are affected by natural and manmade disasters, whereby governments all around the world spend huge amounts of resources on preparation, immediate response, and reconstruction. Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm has been extensively used for efficiently managing disasters, such as volcanic disasters, floods, forest fire, landslides, earthquakes, urban disasters, industrial and terrorist attacks, and so on. However, in a disaster scenario the communication/processing infrastructure and the devices themselves may fail, producing either temporary or permanent network partitions and loss of information. Furthermore, it is expected that in the years to come, IoT will generate large amounts of data, making processing and analysis challenging in time-critical applications. Considering such challenges, ADMITS targets the development of an architecture in which IoT, Fog, and Cloudcomputing technologies participate to provide required capabilities for IoT data analytics, real-time stream processing, and failure monitoring for environments potentially subject to disasters. In this positional paper, we discuss the motivation, objectives, architecture, research challenges (and how to overcome them), and initial efforts for the ADMITS project.

2015 – 2016 - Developing Internet of Things over Secure and Flexible Wireless Sensor Networks.

  • Coordinator: Cíntia Borges Margi
  • Description: The objectives for the first year of this research project are: (i) to implement and run benchmarks for key agreement protocols; (ii) to identify potential security vulnerabilities and list open problems to be solved; (iii) to specify and implement a prototype, evaluating the performance of a flexible and secure WSN/IoT communication framework based on SDN; and (iv) to apply the proposed framework in a WSN with mobile nodes.
