Abstract

Usually, validating research on new Internet protocols and distributed applications
involve the use of simulators, emulators or dedicated experimental networks, with each
approach presenting advantages over the others. PlanetLab provides an alternate
approach, offering an infrastructure distributed in several continents and shared among
the institutions that form its consortium. Through PlanetLab, not only it is possible to
use several distributed nodes for testing new applications and protocols, but it is also
possible to analyze the effects of using them over large distance and subject to the real
Internet traffic conditions. This work intends to present to researchers and networking
professionals the PlanetLab environment for research development.
